“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled concerning the Word of life- the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us- that which we have seen and heard we declare to youth you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.” 1 John 1:1-3
Why do many Christians search the scriptures or the internet to find some new profound teaching? What’s the purpose for the latest and greatest teaching and insight that will somehow radically change their life? If you are following the teaching of someone who thinks they are the only one who has an “in” with God or the only church that teaches truth…. run. John here is reminding his readers that the scriptures written back by Moses were just as true then as they are now. The things you are learning today in your Bible come from these same truths and should not be altered. God is the same yesterday today and forever, and do not let your faith be hijacked by some “new revelation.” This is exactly what John is warning his readers against; falling into the trap of false teachers. The truth of everything “new” and “exciting” about Jesus who had come and now died for the world’s sins was actually nothing new at all. These “new” teachings just reconfirmed the original truth of God, His love for us, and His means of crediting eternal life to anyone who believes. Even the “New” Testament was really just the Old Testament expounded and explained more clearly to exactly how the “Seed of the woman would crush the serpent head,” and why Abraham could receive God’s righteousness simply by believing.
And think about it. What’s the big hype on “new” teachings if you fail to apply the old ones you already know. Stick to what you know, the Truth. Once you perfect that… then you can start searching for the latest rage. By then those false teachers would have crashed and burned, exposing their true colors and you would be closer to the finish line in the race God called you to.
